The Wind Turbine Technician Academy is a competency based program providing graduates a multi-craft credential, uniquely aligned with skills needed by the wind power industry, for the construction, operation, and maintenance of utility sized wind turbines. The program can ensure success in a field with growing opportunities and for the training of the next generation workforce.
The 26-week Wind Turbine Technician program will be based on the competency standards of the Bildungszentrum fur Erneuerbare Energien (BZEE) - Renewable Energy Education Centre based in Husum, Germany. The BZEE has been training Wind Turbine Technicians and testing for certification since 2000. Industry advisors for the BZEE represent the largest worldwide manufacturers and contractors in the wind energy field today. Those same companies are at work today in the United States advancing our nation toward the goal of 20 percent wind by 2030.
The M-TEC Wind Turbine Technician Academy will be the first program in the United States to offer students an opportunity to earn the BZEE Wind Turbine Technician credential. M-TEC will benefit from the opportunity to partner with Lethbridge College, Lethbridge Alberta, Canada. They have delivered a BZEE certification training program since 2005, and are well positioned to assist M-TEC in our start up tasks.
A Wind Turbine Technician must have a highly integrated set of skills which allows them to work on electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems.
The Wind Turbine Technician Academy will consist of three integrated segments:
Module One: Pre-Employment Electrical Apprenticeship - 9 Weeks
Participants will receive instruction equivalent to the first two years of classroom instruction as required for an electrical apprenticeship.
Module Two: Wind Turbine Technologies - 14 Weeks
Fourteen weeks will be devoted to Wind Turbine Technologies. The program covers wind turbine electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems; wind dynamics; wind turbine design; blade repair; and safety training.
Module 3: Field Work Experience - 3 Weeks
Three weeks of work on a wind farm is required to complete the program.
